Water goes where you send it.
When gutters clog, water spills over the edge and lands right against the foundation. It splashes up the siding, soaks the ground next to the basement, and in winter it can freeze into ice on steps and walkways below.
In our area the key time is late fall, after the leaves are down and before freeze-up, with a check in spring after winter. We clear the troughs, flush the downspouts, bag and remove the debris, and make sure the water is pointed away from the house. If the ground by the foundation slopes the wrong way, that’s where our drainage and grading work comes in.
